Short after installing Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday for the month of August, a small number of users started reporting that the update caused Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) and boot failures on their systems. The company acknowledged the issue, removed the update temporarily, and recommended users to uninstall the patch. According to the company the update in question, KB2982791, had a few known issues: incorrect rendering of installed font in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, Windows RT, and Server 2012 R2, and locking down of the Fonts folder in the operating system. Now the KB2993651 security update seems to solved the issue and replaces the previous problematic patch. The update is available immediately from the Windows Update. If you still didn’t get it, go to Control Panel, Windows Update, and do an update check. After installing the patch, you’ll be prompted to restart. It’s important to note that Microsoft strongly recommends to uninstall the previous update KB2982791, prior to install the replacement KB2993651; though, it should not affect in any way installing the new update on top the old one. Even though the software maker released a fix to the recent issues with the August Patch Tuesday update, the company still lists a set of known issues in its support site, including the Fonts problem, which indicates that Microsoft has yet to completely resolve the system crash issues.
