The app blends in with the overall new Windows 8 metro design and now you can enjoy movies, documentaries and TV episodes for a longer period of time. Thanks to the app is more CPU efficient than streaming video via web browser, resulting in better battery life per charge. Netflix noted that this is version “1” and more updates and ideas are coming soon.

The app is free, but of course, you’ll need a subscription to get access to the streaming video catalog. Usability is pretty straightforward, just head over the Windows Store, do a search for Netflix, click Install and then login. When you are logged in you’ll notice a big red ribbon on the left side of the screen with navigation categories including: Home, Top Picks for you, New Release and Genres; and to the right you will see all the recent videos you’ve watching, instant queue, recently watched, Popular on Netflix and more. It is worth noting that as far as I can tell the app is very simple with not many options just yet. For example, you can only search movies available for streaming and by titles, you cannot queue DVDs via the Windows 8 app or watch movie trailers, and finally you don’t have the thumbnail previews as you do in the web version of the streaming service.
